Class Description:

Snow is mostly white, so how the heck do you paint it with just watercolors? The answer is values. In this 30-minute class, we'll paint a quiet, snowy street using just one deep blue and a small pop of brighter color. We'll let light and dark do the heavy lifting by building up layers with care.
It's a small, charming winter scene that's right at home on the front of a card, and a great workout for your art skills. You’ll walk away with a better eye for shadows and highlights, as well as better control of your water-to-pigment ratio.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to paint snow using values instead of white paint
  • How to control water-to-pigment ratio
  • How to plan highlights and work around them
  • How to suggest a house with minimal detail
  • How to paint simple reflections

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Watercolor paper
  • A deep blue: Payne's Gray or Indigo
  • One bright accent color: a pink like Quinacridone Pink, or a yellow like Lemon Yellow
  • A medium round paintbrush
  • Two jars of water
  • Rag or paper towels
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Painting surface/art board and masking tape
