Join this exciting class focused on drawing pearls and gems through an understanding of light, shadow, and shape. We’ll explore the essential characteristics of these materials while honing our graphite drawing skills. Through observation and reference study, students will learn how to create depth and visual interest in their artwork. Throughout the course, demonstrations and practical exercises will guide each artist in developing their unique approach to capturing the elegance of pearls and gems on paper.

What You Will Learn:

  • Discover how to effectively use a range of values to create depth and dimension in your drawings.
  • Discuss the differences between soft and hard pencils, and how each can be utilized for various shading effects.
  • Explore methods for blending graphite to achieve smooth transitions and soft shadows.
  • Focus on the unique characteristics of pearls, including reflections and surface texture.
  • Understand the properties of different gems, and observe how to depict facets, color, and light refraction in your drawings.
  • Learn how to use references to create realistic drawings.

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Graphite pencils (various hardness: H, B, 2B, etc.)
  • Drawing paper or newsprint
  • Kneaded eraser for highlights and texture
  • Blending stumps or tortillons for shading techniques

So much more nuanced but at the same time, it was more flexible in the approach of drawing gems. I have always wondered but now feel more confident in drawing different shapes. Although expecting information on textures, it was incorporating colour that was a game changer for me. Thanks, Shelby.
