Class Description:

Whether you're sketching clothing, interior scenes, or still life compositions, understanding how different fabrics behave is essential for creating convincing drawings. Through hands-on demonstrations and practical exercises, you'll learn to observe and capture the unique characteristics of various fabric types, from stiff canvas to flowing silk. This class combines foundational theory with plenty of practice time, giving you the skills and confidence to tackle any fabric drawing challenge.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to identify and draw the three main fabric categories (stiff, medium, and soft)
  • Techniques for capturing different fabric textures (shiny, matte, and fuzzy surfaces)
  • The fundamentals of how fabric weight and thickness affect fold formation
  • How to observe and draw various types of folds, pleats, and drapes
  • Understanding fabric tension vs. relaxation and how to show this in your drawings
  • Methods for setting up effective fabric still life compositions

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Drawing paper (at least 5-6 sheets)
  • Pencils (2H, HB, 2B, 4B recommended)
  • Eraser (kneaded and/or white eraser)
  • Blending stump or tortillon
  • A dishtowel or old t-shirt for hands-on practice
  • Reference images of fabrics (we'll provide some, but feel free to bring your own)

She is a professional watercolorist, letterer, and artist with a passion for teaching others to reintroduce creativity back into their lives. Fabric was my complete nemesis, but by the end of the two hours Shelby had explained things so well that I had drawings that resembled fabric on my page. I consider that a win in my book!
