Course Description:

Monochrome art is eye-catching and unique because it uses a single color to illustrate an entire piece. Best of all, when you explore a color’s full range of tonal values—from the brightest tones to the darkest tones—you enhance your painting by creating greater depth and dimension.

But many watercolorists aren’t sure how to build up values to create such bold visual contrast. As a result, their paintings often look flat and rather dull.

Fortunately, this course walks you step-by-step through four monochrome projects that each focus on mastering a different color’s range of tonal values—that means you don’t have to worry about juggling multiple pigments in one painting!

By the time you’ve completed this course, you’ll understand how to create value scales and apply the paint-to-water ratio more accurately so that you can add layers and distinguish between values with ease.

What You Will Learn:

  • What a value scale is and how to create one
  • How different colors can affect the mood of your painting
  • A review of 5 watercolor painting techniques
  • A monochromatic painting hack to make determining values in your paintings easier

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Watercolor paper
  • Round brush
  • Flat brush
  • Watercolor paints
  • Mixing well
  • Masking tape (or painter’s tape)
  • Cotton rag (or paper towels)
  • White ink or white gouache paint (optional)
  • Heat tool (optional)

Explore Class Projects:

In this course, you’ll learn to create these amazing class projects, but more importantly, you’ll learn how to create your own pieces in the future.

Learned I liked making monochromatic paintings in this course! 🙂

I thought a good painting had to have tons of different colors to be pleasing to the eye. However, I learned I could make a beautiful painting with only one color and using different values can make a big impact on the viewer. I am very proud of the projects I made in this course!

Good Paints, good brushes, good paper very important!

Miranda's presentation was easy to follow and covered every detail of the project. My take away was that I needed better quality paints and brushes. Fortunately I followed Miranda's advice and used 140# cotton paper (makes all the difference). My goal is to now duplicate each project again with different colors. Practice makes perfect?

My review

This was a very informative course with many opportunities to practice using value and tone. Miranda was knowledgeable, engaging, easy to understand and follow along with! The pace of the course was perfect and I didn't feel like I was getting "left behind" during the paint alongs. I ended up with value studies for several paints in my palette and four awesome monochrome paintings. I would highly recommend this course!
