Class Description:

You don't need to draw every needle to make a believable pine tree! In this 30-minute class, we'll keep things loose and start by capturing the tree's overall gesture. Then we'll add just enough detail to make it look real and interesting.
We'll look at how pine trees are organized: how branches split off, where pine cones grow and the patterns that repeat throughout the tree. Once you understand that logic, filling in the rest gets much easier. We'll also practice a few different needle textures, from spiky to soft, so you can draw all kinds of evergreens.

What You Will Learn:

  • How pine trees are structured, including branching and pine cones
  • How to start with a loose gesture before adding detail
  • How to draw different needle textures, from spiky to soft
  • How to suggest detail without drawing every needle
  • How to make evergreens look believable and interesting

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Soft graphite pencils (such as 2B, 4B and 6B)
  • Eraser (kneaded, ideally)
  • Sketchbook or drawing paper
  • Blending stump
