Class Description:

What happens when you flip shading upside down? In this 30-minute class, we'll draw a skull with a white China pencil on black paper. Instead of adding shadows, you'll build up the light and let the paper do the work for your darkest darks.

We'll map out the skull's structure, simplify it into light, middle and dark values, then build the form with pressure and layering. You'll walk away with a dramatic drawing fit for Halloween and a better eye for values in all your work.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to simplify a subject into values
  • How drawing light on dark changes your approach to shading
  • How to map the basic structure of a skull
  • How to use pressure and layering to build highlights and midtones

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Black drawing paper
  • White China pencil (also called a grease or wax pencil)
  • Alternate: White Charcoal Pencil
  • Pencil sharpener or peel string for the China pencil
  • Optional: blending stump
