Collaborative Collage: Making New Art with Old Images

Class Description:

Sometimes, the hardest part of making art is staring at a blank page. Luckily, generations of artists have come before you, and have left behind piles upon piles of images that you can use as a starting point for your own art. In this workshop, Rob Kelsey will walk you through the process of making original art by combining found images with new elements. From advertisements to newspaper articles to postcards to book covers, there are millions of existing images that you can use to help spark your creativity and create playful compositions where your work is able to sit in dialogue with that of another artist. We will talk through the whole process from start to finish, from image selection to idea generation to the actual art making itself, as well as concepts like composition, silhouette, narrative, and more. Bring your favorite drawing/painting tools, and a collection of found images, and lets see what stories we can tell together!

What You Will Learn:

  • How to overcome the fear of a blank page
  • How to select found images for your artwork
  • Ways to generate ideas using existing imagery
  • Techniques for combining found images with new elements
  • How to create playful compositions with mixed media

About Instructor

Rob Kelsey

Rob is a Chicago-based art maker, whose practice spans many media, not just illustration. But whether he’s working on a sculpture, mask, painting, or game, it all begins with pen on paper. After graduating from DePaul in 2015 with a degree in Animation for Games, he began expanding his horizons into book arts, printmaking, and more. Whatever media he’s working in, his work is unified by a sense of the macabre, an emphasis on interaction, and the belief that the physical presence of a piece is vital to its essence.

Great class by Rob. I loved seeing how he took an image and changed the narrative by adding or changing some portion. Many great tips along the way. I’m excited to give his technique a try.
