Class Description:

Does your art feel a little... flat? Lifeless? Maybe even… boring?? In this class, we'll explore five powerful tactics that artists use to make their drawings feel more three-dimensional and engaging. You'll learn about shadow, foreshortening, size, overlap, and value; all techniques that will transform your artwork.
By the end of this class, you'll understand exactly how to signal 3D-ness to your audience and create drawings with real depth and dimension. Once you implement these, your artwork will easily look more advanced and visually complex.

What You Will Learn:

  • How shadow creates depth and dimension
  • How foreshortening visually condenses objects
  • How size relationships signal depth to the viewer
  • How overlapping objects create layered, dimensional compositions
  • How value (light and dark) creates the illusion of three-dimensionality
  • How to apply all five depth cues to your own drawings

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Pencils or pens
  • Blending stump or tortillion
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Sketchbook paper
