December 17, 2025 at 7:41 pm in reply to: Your watercolor setup: paints, brushes, and paperI haven’t figured out my favorite paper or brushes yet. But following my own trends, I have a pair of ancient kid’s watercolor sets that I picked up at an estate sale. The Crayola one has the prettiest blue to ever blue and the Prang set I have has a gorgeous colorway. The yellow/orange from the Prang set and the blue from the Crayola set is my favorite combo!

For really fine lettering, I like the Figma Micron pens. I don’t do brush lettering or calligraphy, so for most of my lettering, I’m looking for the perfect sized tips.
I really like Crayola fine tips (not the Super Tips!) and Papermate Flair pens for my lettering projects. Fairly inexpensive, lots of colors, and easy to find. The Crayola tips do break down faster, but I still like them for practice. I also have collected some Marvy Art Director 1400 (discontinued I think) and Pentel Color Pen Fine Point markers from my thrifting adventures that I love!

I love the idea of prompts or challenges. I did Bloomtober this year and had a lot of fun, even if flowers are very outside my comfort zone!

I tend towards print and script, but not brush lettering. I don’t love serifs (I love the look, but hate drawing the serifs!). I love sharp, harsh angles on letters but am enjoying adding flourishes to some letters. I did like the banner class to add something special!

I shared a version of this in my intro, but I tend to hand letter while watching history shows. I letter the keywords, locations, and people. It’s a good way to experiment with color and letter shapes. I don’t love all of them all, but that’s half the fun! This one is the least bad, but I have a serious writing on a slope problem. The hazards on writing on my lap 😀

Hi I’m Kae, or wjgravity all over the internet. I’m a mixed media artist, junk journaller, and collector of skills (art and otherwise)!
As I mentioned, I love trying new things. I don’t always love them, but I still like to try them. I get most of my materials used from yard sales and thrift stores, so I have an army of colored pencils from new brands, discontinued brands, cheap brands, and expensive brands. The same with the markers I use for hand-lettering (though not brush lettering, turns out I’m not a fan!).

I thought about using something with a reference, and likely will for some stuff moving forward, but otherwise I accept it as part of the charm! This page and a few like it are specifically to fill out the last few pages in my junk journal. I love the bound style of sketchbook, but they are a bit more limited in how chunky they can get. So handlettering and sketching it is!

Some Experience – I've tried a few things
Chaos! Art for me is an escape from the highly structured and regulated world I live and work in. My goal isn’t even really to get ‘better’, but to try things, create things, make mistakes, and break the rules 😀
Oh so many favorites, though my real favorite is the hunt to find something new while thrifting!
- Sketchbooks: I like the Michael’s house brand (Artist’s Loft) Mixed Media books in the A4 size. They do get a bit chunky with my junk journalling though!
- Pens: Figma Micron and Zebra F-301
- Markers: Crayola, Papermate Flairs, Pentel Color Pen Fine Point, Marvy Art Director 1400 (discontinued I think)
- Acrylic paint: Artist’s Loft again, it’s thick, pigmented, and dries fast which I like
- Colored pencils (probably my favorite tool): Prismacolor, Artist’s Loft, Spectracolor (discontinued), SIVO (discontinued)
- Watercolors: Crayola, Prang, and the Crayola watercolor pencils
