March 2026 Challenge

Are you ready to push your watercolor skills to the next level? This March, we’re launching our monthly creative challenge, and we want YOU to participate! Whether you’re a seasoned painter or just getting your bearing with watercolors, this challenge is designed to help you grow as an artist while connecting with a vibrant community of creative explorers.

Why We Love Monthly Challenges

At Foxsy, we believe that growth happens when we challenge ourselves—but not in a way that feels overwhelming or impossible. Our monthly challenges are designed to be approachable, fun, and focused on exploration rather than perfection. They give you permission to step outside your comfort zone, deepen existing skills, or try something completely new. Plus, being part of a community working through the same challenge? That’s the magic that keeps you motivated and inspired.

Our Creative Collective group votes on what challenges we’ll cover each month. Want to have a say? Join the Collective!

This Month: Minimalist Watercolor Landscapes

This March, we’re tackling minimalist watercolor landscapes—and it’s all about letting go of control.

If you’ve ever felt frustrated trying to paint tiny details or felt like you needed to have everything perfectly planned before touching brush to paper, this challenge is for you. The goal is to embrace the flow of watercolor, to let the paint and water work with you rather than against you. We’re focusing on loose, slightly abstracted landscapes that celebrate the beauty of the medium itself.

By the end of this challenge, you’ll have a deeper understanding of:

  • Basic landscape composition and elements (foreground, midground, background)
  • The crucial water-to-paint ratio that makes watercolor magic happen
  • Wet-on-wet painting techniques
  • Color mixing and how different colors can convey different landscape elements

We’re not worried about creating photorealistic landscapes that look life-like. This is about the painting experience—the joy of discovery, the thrill of watching colors bloom across wet paper, and the freedom to explore however you want.

Challenge Parameters

Create 10 minimalist watercolor landscapes. We’re keeping them small—no more than 6×6 inches each. Why? Because smaller pieces help you stay loose and experimental. The bigger the space, the easier it is to get caught up in details. Small paintings let you play, flow, and explore without that pressure.

Materials You’ll Need

See our recommendations for Watercolor Supplies âž¡

Watercolors – Use whatever you have on hand. Your existing palette is perfect!

Watercolor paper – We recommend using 100% cotton paper for this challenge. Why? Since we’re focusing so heavily on wet-on-wet painting and paint flow, high-quality cotton paper will hold up beautifully and give you that gorgeous blooming effect you’re after. That said, if you don’t have 100% cotton paper available, don’t let that stop you! Use what you have, and you’ll still learn and grow.

Brushes – You’ll want at least one large brush (flat, mop, or round—whatever you have) to quickly get down water and pigment. Add a medium round brush to your kit, and you’re set. We’re not using tiny detail brushes here!

Other supplies:

Two jars of water

A rag for cleaning your brush

An art board to tape your paintings to

Masking or painter’s tape to secure your work

Optional: A heat tool or hair dryer for speeding up dry time (though we’ll be working with fewer layers this month)

Ready to Create?

The beauty of this challenge is that it’s open to everyone. Create your 10 minimalist landscapes at your own pace, experiment freely, and embrace the imperfect magic of watercolor.

Here’s where the real fun begins: Share your results! Post them in the Fox Den community or on Instagram and tag @foxsy_official. We’d love to see your creations, celebrate your progress, and cheer you on as you explore this beautiful medium.

Whether you’re looking to deepen your skills, find your creative community, or simply challenge yourself to something new, this March challenge is your invitation to play, explore, and create.

Let’s paint! 🎨
