To answer my own question, I like to recommend Tombow Dual Brush Pens for newbies. These have fabulous features to help beginners to get used to the feel of a brush pen.

Currently, I’m favoring a custom palette made with Daniel Smith, Qor, & Sennelier watercolors. My current favorite brush is a gorgeous Winsor & Newton Series 250 Squirrel brush (size 2).
