I have a confession…

<hr>🎭 “Confessions of a Watercolor Heretic”

CAST

  • YOU – An anxious but proud art student

  • SHELBY – The calm, all-knowing Art Priest (and Mentor)

<hr>INT. CONFESSIONAL BOOTH – DAY

(Dim light. You slide into the confessional. Nervous shuffle. Paper rustling.)

YOU
(whispering)
Forgive me, Shelby, for I have sinned.

(Pause.)

It has been… three days since my last critique.

<hr>

SHELBY (O.S.)
(serene, priestly)
Go on, my child. Lay down your brushes… and your burdens.

<hr>

YOU
I was weak.
I was tired.
And instead of glazing slowly and trusting the process…

(deep breath)
…I used ChatGPT.

<hr>

(Sharp intake of breath. Dramatic pause.)

<hr>

SHELBY
Did you at least… stretch your paper first?

<hr>

YOU
Yes, Father—
I mean, Shelby.
Cold press. Proper tape. Two cups of water.

(beat)
But the composition?
The focal point?
The value structure?

(whispers)
AI-assisted.

<hr>

SHELBY
(low, ominous)
And what did this machine tell you?

<hr>

YOU
It spoke of leading lines.
Of lost-and-found edges.
It suggested a limited palette.

(growing confidence)
Shelby… the watercolor was fantastic.

<hr>

SHELBY
(sighs)
Was it… too fantastic?

<hr>

YOU
It had mood.
Atmosphere.
A believable shadow temperature.

(leans in)
I rolled a natural 20 on composition.

<hr>

(Beat. Silence.)

<hr>

SHELBY
(now clearly amused)
Ah. You multiclassed.

<hr>

YOU
Just one level!
I swear!
Still a full-time Watercolor Cleric.
ChatGPT was… a Bard.

<hr>

SHELBY
(chuckling)
Did you at least make the final brushstrokes yourself?

<hr>

YOU
Every one.
Wobbly lines. Blooming washes.
A tragic backrun I chose to “call intentional.”

<hr>

SHELBY
Then listen well.

(dramatic priest voice)
Tools do not make the artist.
They merely grant advantage on the roll.

<hr>

YOU
So… I’m absolved?

<hr>

SHELBY
Say three value studies,
paint one object from life,
and for penance…

(beat)
Teach someone else what you learned.

<hr>

YOU
(relieved)
Thank you, Shelby.

<hr>

SHELBY
Now go forth.

(gentler)
And remember—
even the old masters would’ve used AI
if it mixed their paint.

<hr>

(You exit. Choir music. Fade out.)

<hr>

Should we discuss the merit or the evil of AI?
Should I upload a picture of the finished project?

Maybe both!

Merry season of painting to all, and to all some good light!!!

    Melissa, this is genius!! I laughed through the entire script. The penance was hysterical. If you really used AI, post it. Confession is always available 😅

    🙂 I used AI to create that script, obviously. AND… I used it to help me plan a project-I will post pictures when I’m done. If anyone is curious about the method/platform I used, I’d be happy to start another post when I have some more time and share the details. I was really shocked at how helpful it was. Now…. let’s see what the real results are!

    I’m curious to explore viewpoints on the topic-while I’m finding it extremely helpful in many, many ways, I also understand there are some serious risks. Some of which are likely be overstated.

    Fun Fact:
    I told it “bonus points for some type of D&D reference when creating the script above” – I know nothing about that, but also know Shelby does. Now… its including random D&D quips in each response. I’m watching to see when it stops, or if I have to tell it to.

    Melissa, this is CRACKING me UP. 😂🤣

    I think it’s a great idea to discuss AI and how it fits into the world of art. Like it or not, that Pandora’s Box has been opened, and there’s no undoing it. AI is here and it’s not leaving anytime soon.

    Perhaps I’ll start a forum on that subject in particular. I think we as a community can share our thoughts and have respectful discourse!

    OMG, this is amazing! Even with Chat GPT this was epic! Now that it is official that Shelby is the all-wise I can’t unsee it! But I shudder to think whatever I have to confess to should I dare enter the sacred space!

    Happy New Year Everyone!!! Attached is the photo I painted after conspiring with Chat GPT! It’s my childhood home and I used it as the cover for the cookbook I compiled of family recipes and shared with my family this Christmas.

    I may continue the conversation in the new thread Shelby created about how/why I used Chat GPT for this project, but I’ll say this: It was one of the most rewarding pieces I think I’ve ever created. Having the “assist” from AI gave me some peace of mind, helped me move through the process, and just made the entire experience really neat. I ENJOYED it much more with less frustration, self doubt and insecurity.

    Do I feel great about using AI? Not exactly, but yet I continue to do so.

    MOST IMPORTANTLY… with out the coaching I received in the Creative Collective starting last spring, the experience would NOT have been the same. Using specific prompts, I got AI to spit out a reminder of much of what we discussed. I had to prompt it correctly, I had to ask the right questions. I was able to use the info given because I had some experience.

    Over time, with lots more practice, I will know these answers and won’t need AI Guidance. But, I’m ok using it as another tool to make art until then.

    Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk 😉
