Class Description:

Spider webs are all about thin, delicate lines, and that's exactly where a brush struggles with goopy, sticky masking fluid. In this 30-minute class, we'll use masking fluid and a precision tool to lay down a crisp, detailed spider web. I'll be using a ruling pen I made in the DIY Soda Can Calligraphy Nib class, but I'll show you other tools that work too.

Once the masking fluid is dry, we'll paint a soft, moody background with simple washes and color, then peel away the mask to reveal the web. The background stays simple so we can focus on the technique, and you'll walk away with a gorgeous painting perfect for the season.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to apply masking fluid in thin, precise lines
  • How to use a ruling pen, rigger brush, dip pen or silicone tool with masking fluid
  • How to plan a spider web that looks natural and balanced
  • How to paint a soft wash background over masked areas
  • How to remove masking fluid cleanly

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Watercolor paper
  • Watercolor paint
  • A medium round paintbrush
  • Two jars of water
  • Rag or paper towels
  • A large flat or mop brush for washes
  • Painting surface/art board
  • Masking tape
  • Masking fluid
  • Pencil and kneaded eraser
  • A fine-line tool for applying masking fluid (any one of these): A long rigger brush (an old one you don't mind using with masking fluid); A silicone sculpting tool (color shaper); A dip pen; A ruling pen (want to make your own? Check out the DIY Soda Can Calligraphy Nib class)
  • Optional: a heat tool
